In Germany 1873, Jakob Bengel founded a chain and costume jewellery factory.
Up to 1920, the company specialised in the production of watch chains and chatelaines and then in the 20s and 30s, it became one of the leading manufacturers of Art Deco fashion jewellery
It was during this time that designers were looking to obtain new materials and inspiration to produce costume jewellery.
Inspired by fashion trendsetters such as Coco Chanel, Bengel started to produce experimental jewelry. The pieces, catalogued 1924–1939, combined brass and chrome with geometric shapes of colored galalith which is now so sought after and collectible. The company ceased productions in 1939.
